the berry picking gene

My hubbies family all have an extra gene we call the
"berry picking gene". Seriously! He had a
great great Aunt that fell over a cliff trying to get
the last berry.(kinda sad since she still had children).
Yesterday while  picking blackberries I was trying to
remember if I had ever picked
berries before I got married.
Surely I must have...but I have no recollection of it.
Everywhere we lived we've found some kind of berry to
pick. Alaska...wild blueberries and raspberries...California...wild blackberries
Texas....blackberries and of course here there are blackberries literally everywhere.
The first summer we moved here my hubby gave each of the children a three gallon quota for blackberries and that lasted til they left home. (those were the days!)
The family used to get together and pick huckleberries. We have a good place up in the mountains but some years are better than others.
Maybe we'll get to pick this year.
Last year we never got any blackberry jam made so I was determine to get that done this week, none of this running out of jam
half way through the winter!

And I'm happy to say all our children are passing down that berry
picking gene to their children!

  1. We've had no rain for months, so the blackberries are just not swelling. Even so, I did manage to freeze some about a month ago.

My favourite is Blackberry Jelly. Wonderful.

  5. Love the hat! And I don't blame you at all for wanting less work...I am sorry but your yard would drive me crazy! All those years I did all the yard work and now we have a rock yard and cactus can't say how happy I am ...I would be be a neavus wreck with all your work.

  6. I love the idea of berry-picking gene! We have it in our family. The Choke Cherries I've picked! Our Blackberries are just starting to ripen so we'll be out with pails soon. Lillypad makes blackberry ice cream and I make pies.
I'd love to have some of your honey - but how about if you don't mail it, but save it for me and I'll come and get it in October? We could meet up for a cup of tea! Let me know what you think.

  7. I don't know if many of my kids got it...maybe we ran out by the time it got to James and Cozy. They won't hardly even pick em to eat em!
