mushroom logs

Every year at the Flower and Garden show in Seattle we have a mason bee booth. During our breaks we look for the one thing we want to take home. Everybody gets a treat for their hard work. This year my Manly Man had his eyes on the mushroom logs. You buy alittle zip lock bag full of little inch long doweling covered with mushroom spores. You pound them into a hardwood log, keep them wet and in six months you'll have mushrooms.

So, anyone that wanted to got a chance to drill holes and pound in doweling. My daughter took home one log, or was it two? She talked of having her 12 yr. old carry them on his lap!

You never use an old log (even though it'd be cuter)since their full of all kinds of stuff already...so always use new cut. My Manly Man took down an alder tree.

I'm sure you can get them other places but, here's where we got ours from. Their e-mail address: cascadiamushrooms@gmail

  1. LOVE THE MUSHROOM LOGS! Linda, wonderful. Maybe I saw you at the Northwest show a few years ago when I spoke and judged there. My book Country Living GARDENER A Blessing of Toads has a whole story on mason bees. You might be able to find it your library.

Maine is my beloved spot, but I once had a cottage on Orcas and that to is enchanted. But Maine...no words can describe it and I think you'd love it too.

All good to you bee lady,

  2. I've always wanted to try this. I hope you'll keep us informed. Do they stay outside?

  3. James, the non-mushroom eater, even wants to make these! They look like so much fun to make. Now we just need to take down some trees.
