sleepless in Seattle

We met in college biology. We clicked and became life long friends. We introduced my brother and her sister and they married. We didn't always stay in touch, sometimes only through family. She actually lived in Texas while we did , letting us get together . She was always "Aunt Sue" to our children. How else do you explain such a relationship?  She now lives in the town I grew up in, four hours from here.

I've seen way too much of her this last year and a half. She has bone cancer. They've taken out her pelvis, replaced it with cadaver bone, it didn't take so they replaced it with cement. She's had infection continually and now has another tumor on the sacrum, and some nodes in her lung. I've spent the last few days with her. She's presently in the University of Washington Hospital. Her sister, my sister-in-law came up and since they postponed her surgery we got to just hang out. We talked about kids, grandkids, family secrets, favorite tv shows, husbands, and things only women can talk about. We laughed alot. It was nice.

Why "Sleepless in Seattle"? Out her hospital window we could see the houseboat  it was filmed in.

  1. Oh, Linda. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. We went through it with my husband's sister. She had brain cancer. Sadly she didn't make it. It's so hard on everyone-especially family. Ours was a 4 year ordeal. I really sympathize. I'll say prayers for her. Keep your chin up.

  2. Sorry for all of you. I know how stressful these things can be. You are doing the right thing though - LAUGH. Nothing can beat a good mental attitude. Hang in there. W.C.C.

  3. Very sad, Linda. Keep on seeing too much of her, that's the best medicine.

  5. Good morning, Linda - I'm so sorry to hear about this. There can't be any greater gift than your presence and the laughter and memories you share.
I loved your previous post about the homemade cards. What a great idea - especially loved the little fellow riding the dinosaur!
    Thinking about you...........

  6. Oh Linda, my heart goes out to you and of course Sue and her family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. My special friend whom I met in 2nd year when we were at high school and have been friends through all the years, suddenly for no apparent reason became ill last August only to be diagnosed with lung cancer a month later. She passed away on December 13th 2009.
I am still devastated. She was so vivacious and full of life and never gave any indication of feeling ill.
