Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.

Posted by PicasaThis was a way of life for the people who lived through the depression. Many people were at the edge of hunger from 1929-1935 . There was also a widespread drought, the depression nationwide. The fortunate ones were the ones that lived on farms. There's an old Southern expression about butchering :" We'll save everything but the squeal".  They also said "Gravy saved more lives during the Depression than penicillin saves today."  I remember my mother telling me she remembered her parents waking them up late at night to tell them that they needed to use less tolit paper.

This picture of my Manly Mans  mothe  was taken during the depression. The cute outfit  she made out of flour sacks. Her and her grandmother would buy the same pattern when they bought their flour , untill they had enough to make a dress. I certainly have alot of respect for what they went through and wonder if  that might be somewhere in our future and how we'd do.

  1. I can only hope that cute flour sacks are in our future! ...the rest of it - I could do without.

  4. Were these flour-sacks printed specially to be used as such? It's a great idea. The shoes and socks say quite a lot too.

  5. Our parents can still teach us a lot - those who lived through those hard times know about making do and making the most of everything. I think your mother-in-law looks so sweet in that dress! How proud she must have been!

  7. She made that out of flour sacks? My jaw is on the floor. What a strong, capable woman your mother must have been.
